Transitions Therapeutic School

This full-day program for boys age 5-17 with emotional and behavioral challenges combines academics and therapy to give students the skills and knowledge they need to integrate back into their community school successfully.

The school features:

  • Full days, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., during the school year; a half-day program is offered in summer
  • Small classrooms, averaging 12 students, allowing for individual attention
  • A certified special education teacher and a para educator in each classroom
  • An Integrated curriculum that emphasizes activity-based learning and closing the achievement gap
  • Intense work with students to meet educational and treatment goals
  • A nutritious daily lunch

Family involvement

We place a high priority on family involvement in the child’s education and therapy. Family members participate in an initial meeting to review the individual education plan, attend parent-teacher conferences and treatment team meetings. Social and volunteer opportunities also are available. Teachers and other staff contact parents weekly, and students bring home a daily progress report for parents to review and sign.

Therapeutic services

Individual and group therapy are provided, focusing on:

  • behavioral self-control
  • anger management
  • social skills
  • adolescent issues
  • self-esteem
  • substance abuse

Education services

The school’s core curriculum includes:

  • language arts
  • reading
  • math
  • social studies
  • science

Enrollment

Generally, students are referred to the Transitions Therapeutic School by school districts, Wraparound Milwaukee, the court system, the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare, or other social service agencies.

An initial meeting offers parents, school district staff and/or the referring case manager the opportunity to review program expectations and complete all necessary forms. At this meeting, an individual education plan is reviewed, and the child’s academic and therapeutic needs are discussed to ensure there is a good fit between the student’s needs and St. Aemilian-Lakeside’s services.

If you are interested in referring a child to St. Aemilian-Lakeside’s Day Treatment School, please contact Gina Aiello at gaiello@st-al.org 414-465-5735.
